introduction carbomer (carb0mer) is a high molecular polymer cross-linked with acrylic acid and allyl sucrose or propenyl pentaerythritol. it was first produced by G00drich company in the United States and its trade name is Carb0p01. The 2005 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia has been included. This product is a loose white powder, acidic, hygroscopic and special slightly smelly, soluble in water, ethanol, glycerin. The molecule contains 56% ~ 58% carboxyl groups, so it is weakly acidic. When carbomer is dispersed in water, due to the repulsion between negative charges generated by the ionization of carboxyl groups, the curled polymer stretches out and expands in volume. The pH of the 0.5% aqueous dispersion is 2.7~3.5. The 1% aqueous dispersion can be neutralized with alkaline substances to form a gel. The concentration of commonly used aqueous dispersions is 0.1% ~ 3.0%.
pharmacological action this product is a hydrogel, composed of solid phase (I. e. carbomer) and liquid phase (water) as dispersion medium. Carbomer is a polyacrylic acid polymer cross-linked with pentaerythritol allyl ether or sucrose. Based on its hydrogel properties, this product can adhere to the surface of the cornea and can retain fluid. The structure of the gel will be destroyed by the salt in the tears, releasing the water in it.
application carbomer's main functions are thickening, suspension, emulsification and other functions. it can be used as gel, binder, coating material, rheology improver (humidification agent, lubricant, suspending agent, stabilizer) and so on in pharmacy, and has a wide range of applications, especially in new drug delivery systems.
